Britain and America have hammered out a major commercial pact that will preserve no import taxes on UK pharmaceutical exports entering the US market.

The Terms of the Accord

As part of the deal, the UK has committed to raise funding on medicines through the public health system. This pledge secures that duties on these crucial products will remain at zero for a timeframe of three years.

This development is in response to earlier statements to significantly raise tariffs on branded pharmaceutical imports, with increases discussed as high as double the cost.

"This arrangement with the Britain reinforces the worldwide climate for cutting-edge drugs and brings long-overdue fairness to American-British drug exports," a statement noted.

Economic Impact

Pharmaceuticals represent one of the Britain's biggest exports to the US, which is clearly the biggest market for leading British pharmaceutical firms.

Export figures show that in the one-year period to the end of the third quarter, the UK shipped medicines valued at over eleven billion pounds to the US. This amount accounted for nearly one-fifth of all goods exports in that timeframe.

"This guarantee safeguards jobs, increases funding and paves the way for the UK to establish itself as a worldwide center for biotech and pharma," a government official commented.

Specific UK Commitments

The deal involves several specific pledges from the British government:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will increase the price threshold at which it considers new therapies to be too expensive by 25%.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a goal to raise overall public funding on medicines from 0.3 percent of the national economy to 0.6% over the coming ten years.
  • Payback Limit: The sum pharmaceutical firms must refund to the NHS to stay within budget will be limited at fifteen percent. In the past, repayments topped twenty percent.

Broader Context

The pact comes amid a long-running tension between the sector and the British authorities over spending levels and approval rates.

This friction were heightened by claims that US patients were charged several times more for the same drugs than consumers in the UK and Europe.

In recent months, several large pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been halted or abandoned, while multi-billion-dollar investments have been announced toward projects in the United States.

The Science Minister acknowledged that the NHS had to spend more on drugs, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had declined as a share of its resources over the past decade.
