Trump Calls for Jailing of Windy City Mayor and State Executive as Military Forces Deploy in Metropolis

Former President Donald J. Trump on Wednesday called for the incarceration of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, alleging them of failing to protect federal immigration officers.

"Chicago's Mayor belongs behind bars for failing to secure Immigration agents!" Trump wrote on social media early Wednesday. "Governor Pritzker too!"

Both officials are members of the Democratic party.

Trump's statements come alongside the arrival of state military troops in the Chicago region following directives from the federal administration, despite vehement protests from state officials such as Pritzker and Johnson.

"This represents not the first instance where Trump has sought to have an African American leader unjustly detained," Mayor Johnson stated on that day. "I'm not going put."

Pritzker also replied via online channels, stating: "I refuse to yield. Trump is now demanding arrests of elected officials resisting his authority. What remains on the road toward full-blown authoritarianism?"

As of midweek, military troops from Texas had arrived at the Elwood army reserve center, a military installation approximately 80 kilometers from Chicago, as the administration advances with its aggressive urban crime policy and immigration enforcement operations.

The president has labeled Chicago a "dangerous hellhole", even though police data indicate significant drops in most criminal activities, including homicides.

On Wednesday, two hundred state guard troops were expected to deploy to the Chicago area, with another 300 Illinois guard personnel preparing to mobilize, according to sources. Authorities indicated the soldiers would not perform law enforcement duties but would secure ICE officers and government buildings.

Soldiers in combat attire with Texas national guard patches were observed at the military facility in Elwood. Trucks marked "Emergency Disaster Services" dropped off portable toilets and other supplies. Trailers were arranged in rows. Additional fencing was placed around the perimeter.

Aviation authorities imposed flight restrictions over the army reserve center for safety concerns until 6 December.

The administration has escalated immigration enforcement in the city in recent weeks, triggering protests, particularly near an processing facility in Broadview.

Earlier this week, Illinois and Chicago filed a lawsuit against the federal government, attempting to halt the National Guard deployment, asking a federal judge to stop what they describe as "Trump's long-declared 'Battle'" on the city and state, labeling it "unlawful and dangerous".

A court hearing on their lawsuit is set for Thursday.

The mayor also signed an executive order on that day prohibiting ICE officers and related personnel from using city-owned property as staging areas for enforcement actions.

Pritzker has charged the president of using military forces as "staged tools" and "chess pieces".

During a press briefing on Tuesday, he said that the president is trying to "rationalize and normalize the deployment of armed soldiers under his direct command."

The historic Posse Comitatus Act restricts the military's role in enforcing domestic laws. However, the president has stated he would be willing to activate the Insurrection Act, which allows a commander-in-chief to send regular army in states that are failing to suppress an uprising or are defying federal law.

After beginning his new administration, Trump has sent or mentioned deploying troops to over ten cities, such as major metropolitan areas and West Coast locations like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, claiming that the military presence is necessary to fight violence and protect ICE officers.

Data indicates that serious offenses nationwide has decreased in the past few years. In Chicago, for example, murders were reduced 31% to 278 through late summer, according to law enforcement reports.

New survey data published on that day revealed that the majority of US citizens disapprove of the deployment of troops without an external threat.
