The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Sees Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
