The Global Health Body Raises Alert Over Acute Lack of Obesity Medications

Less than a tenth of people that would benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy are able to get them, caution the global health agency as it releases its first advice on the drugs.

Given more than one billion people worldwide now classified as obese, it is calling for broader and more equitable availability to GLP-1 medication.

Based on estimates, in excess of 2,000,000,000 could be living with obesity by 2030 if no action is taken.

"The latest guidelines acknowledges that obesity is a chronic disease that can be managed with comprehensive and continuous support," remarked WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, limited production capacity, and logistical bottlenecks are significant barriers to broad availability to the injections that can assist patients in reducing substantial body mass, explains the organization.

Weight-Loss Drug Shortage

Even under the current most optimistic scenario, the production of GLP-1 therapies would only suffice for about 100 million people – under 10% of those who need them, as stated by the health organization.

The advice urges governments and firms to increase availability, by strategies like voluntary licensing.

The intellectual property rights on a key compound – the primary ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in multiple nations in 2026.

How Obesity Jabs Operate

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own hormone to delay gastric emptying, reduce hunger and boost the sense of being full so users consume fewer calories.

Patients usually start to lose weight in the initial weeks of commencing the regular doses.

Research points to patients may put most of the weight back on within a year of discontinuing the treatment, when their usual appetite resume.

To be above a healthy weight increases your risk for contracting diseases, like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and certain malignancies.

Excess weight impacts individuals in all nations and was responsible for over three and a half million deaths worldwide in 2024, according to the health agency.
