Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any significant honors show nears, you'll find a clamor for the addition fresh award types to honor unsung work and delight the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would board games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games in the world and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge game development, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
